Easter is the main event on the Orthodox calendar. The spectacular midnight mass and candle lighting is the culmination of a 40-day period of fasting and preparations leading to Easter Sunday. Mass starts at 11pm on Saturday. Around midnight all lights go off and the priest emerges from the altar with the "Aghio Fos" (Holy Light) which is passed from one person to the next. In a few minutes, the darkness succumbs to the glow of light from the candles of the faithful. A little later, people head back home, carrying the lit candles. An early morning feast follows with the traditional magiritsa.

The first pano was taken during the midnight Easter Mass at the Church of Archimandrio, one of the oldest churches of Ioannina. The second pano is just my family preparing the lamb on Easter Sunday, as typical as it gets.

1-Gigapixel image of the Erechteion

Gigapixel image of the Erechteion
Click the photo to view the zoomable Gigapixel photo of the Erechteion.

This is the highest resolution picture of the Erectheion ever produced. At one gigapixel (1 billion pixels), it allows you to zoom in and view this intriguing building at incredible detail.

How to view it: A flash viewer is used to display the image. You can zoom in and out and move by simply using your mouse or with the controls shown on the screen. A broadband connection is preferable but not essential. Click the photo above and the zoomable image will be displayed in a new window.

This intriguing work of architecture known as the Erechtheion shares the spotlight with the Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis. However, the Erechtheion features something special that sets it apart from the famous temple of Athena Parthenos, and that is its stunning Caryatid Porch (this porch, incidentally, is sometimes referred to as the Porch of the Maidens).

Caryatids are statues that serve both a decorative and structural function (here the caryatids stand on the south side of the Erechtheion). These graceful supports were carved to resemble beautiful maidens. And with their delicate hanging folds of drapery the series of six caryatids cleverly mimic the fluting of an Ionic column.
